About face surgery
Others address specific features such as the eyelids, the lip, or the temple region. What connects these procedures is that they involve delicate anatomy, small tolerances between a good result and a poor one, and a recovery period during which the face goes through visible bruising and swelling before the outcome starts to settle.
What suits one patient doesn't necessarily suit another. Someone with concerns about the neck may be well served by a neck lift alone. Someone with concerns about the eyes may need a targeted blepharoplasty, or may be better served by a broader operation that addresses the brow at the same time. The right procedure depends on your specific anatomy, the changes you're bothered by, and what you're realistically hoping to achieve. The pages within this section give a starting overview of the procedures Dr Henry Shepherd performs, and the details specific to your situation are worked through in person at consultation.
WHAT EVERY FACE PROCEDURE INVOLVES
Whichever procedure suits your situation, certain things stay constant.
01
Every procedure begins with examination, listening, and a frank discussion of alternatives — including not operating.
02
All breast surgery is performed under general anaesthesia in accredited Sydney private hospitals.
03
Most procedures involve one night in hospital, a defined return-to-work window, then a longer window before unrestricted activity.

This is a Medical Board of Australia rule that applies across the country and applies to every Australian specialist plastic surgeon offering cosmetic surgery, not just to our practice.
There's no single right age. Most patients considering facelift or neck lift surgery are in their late forties, fifties or sixties, although patients present at both younger and older ages depending on individual factors including genetics, sun exposure history and weight changes. Blepharoplasty is often considered from the mid-forties onward, and some patients present earlier where there's specific anatomy affecting the eyelid. Age itself is less important than the changes present and the patient's overall health.
Recovery depends on the procedure. Facelift and neck lift typically involve two weeks of visible bruising and swelling before patients feel comfortable in social settings, with continued settling over the following months. Blepharoplasty recovery is generally shorter, with most of the visible bruising settling in one to two weeks. Individual recovery experiences vary. We'll set out a realistic timeframe for your specific procedure at consultation.
Face surgery leaves scars, and where they end up is a key part of the planning. Facelift scars are placed in and around the ears where they can be concealed by hair and the natural contours of the ear. Blepharoplasty scars sit in the eyelid crease or on the inner surface of the eyelid. Every scar is permanent, although most face scars fade to become inconspicuous over 12 to 18 months. How they end up is influenced by individual healing characteristics.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Results and individual outcomes will vary.
