Eleven breast procedures performed by Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Henry Shepherd in Sydney, from augmentation and reduction to reconstructive and revision surgery. Each procedure is shaped at consultation around your anatomy, goals and lifestyle.
ABOUT BREAST SURGERY
Breast surgery covers a range of procedures designed to reshape, restore, or rebalance the breasts — for aesthetic reasons, for reconstructive reasons after cancer surgery, or for functional reasons where the breasts are causing physical symptoms.
Each of the eleven procedures below is a major operation, performed under general anaesthesia in an accredited hospital, with a defined recovery period and a small but real set of risks that warrant detailed discussion before any consent is signed. The information that follows is general; the specific approach for any individual patient is worked out only after a thorough examination, a discussion of goals and lifestyle, and a careful review of alternatives — including the option of not having surgery.
WHAT EVERY BREAST PROCEDURE INVOLVES
Whichever procedure suits your situation, certain things stay constant.
01
Every procedure begins with examination, listening, and a frank discussion of alternatives — including not operating.
02
All breast surgery is performed under general anaesthesia in accredited Sydney private hospitals.
03
Most procedures involve one night in hospital, a defined return-to-work window, then a longer window before unrestricted activity.

Contact Dr ShepherdYes. A referral from a general practitioner who works independently of Dr Shepherd is required for every cosmetic surgery consultation. This is a Medical Board of Australia rule that applies across the country and applies to every Australian specialist plastic surgeon offering cosmetic surgery, not just to our practice.
At least two pre-operative consultations are required for any cosmetic surgery procedure, and at least one of them must be in person with Dr Shepherd. The first consultation is a discussion and assessment. The second is where consent is signed, after you've had time to read the written information you took home from the first consultation. Once you've signed informed consent, there's a minimum seven day cooling off period before surgery can be booked.
Dr Shepherd holds operating rights at several private hospitals in Sydney, including St Vincent's Private Hospital, St George Private Hospital, East Sydney Private Hospital, Bondi Junction Private Hospital, St Lukes Private Hospital and Aesthetic Day Surgery. Public reconstructive and oncological work is done at St Vincent's Public and St George Public Hospitals.
Some breast procedures attract a Medicare rebate when specific clinical criteria are met. This applies most often to certain breast reductions where physical symptoms have been documented, and to reconstructive procedures. Cosmetic procedures generally aren't covered by Medicare or by private health funds. We'll provide a written quote covering all surgical, anaesthetic and hospital fees after your consultation so you have a complete picture.
Suitability is assessed at consultation. It depends on factors including your overall health, your anatomy, your reasons for considering surgery, your expectations of what surgery can achieve, and any medical conditions that affect the safety of major surgery. Dr Shepherd will be honest with you if he doesn't think a particular procedure is in your best interests, and he'll discuss alternatives, including the option of not having surgery.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Results and individual outcomes will vary.
